Sevenfriday: Visual Appeal
Sevenfriday is a new brand of affordable wristwatches with Swiss origins but with a different twist. Citizen Miyota automatic movements are in its P Series line, My guess is to help keep the cost down. I wanted to purchase one of these watches several months ago, but at the time they were only available online or at a dealer that was hundreds of miles away. I like to play with the watches before I buy it. Because I have a small wrist, I wanted to make sure this large watch at 47mm would fit.
I was looking to purchase a new watch, so I did what I normally do. I drove to Towson, MD, to visit Erik, my watch advisor at Radcliffe Jewelers. I browsed the different lines of watches that Erik had in the display cases, and I saw he had the Sevenfriday watches. I thought to myself this must be my lucky day to finally see these watches up close. The watches definitely look better in person than they do on Sevenfriday's website.
The watches are reasonably priced from $1,150 to $1,475, depending on the model. All P Series watches use the same movement and have the same functions, but the dials and case finishings are different. They have a distinctive design that some have called a poor man’s MB&F or an Urwerk. I think the watch resembles the Ulysse Nardin Freak. The watch dial may look a little confusing at first glance, but it is simple and straightforward, with the standard hour and minute hands, even though each has its own look. The seconds are on a rotating disk at the 5 o'clock position, and what looks like a GMT at the 9 o'clock position is an AM/PM indicator, along with an open balance wheel at the 7 o'clock position, but don't use a jeweler’s loupe for the finishing because it is nonexistent. The watch is large at 47mm but it is a lugless design that makes it fit my small wrist perfectly. The packaging is out of the ordinary—like a mini shipping crate, which adds to the watch’s appeal.
When I do wear this watch out in public, it gets a lot of attention more so than any watch that I own. It is the least expensive watch in my collection, but for getting attention I think it offers the best bang for the buck. This is the watch you want to wear out if you want everyone to notice you. However, if this is not your style, Sevenfriday will be offering a new model called the M Series, which II think looks great without being as flashy.
